COUNTIES MANUKAU MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB

Prez Says - June 2023

Hello CMMSC

Winter is certainly here now.  We're back in the routine of Saturdays at Manurewa, and Wednesdays at Papakura.

Here's a quick run-through of things you should be aware of:

1. Manurewa Pool Closure.  Winter is when Manurewa does its annual pool maintenance shut.  As usual, the actual closure dates are not the same as those previously advertised.  At this time, Manurewa Pool will be unavailable for training on Saturday 1st and Saturday 8th of July.  We'll recommence Saturday swimming on Saturday the 15th of July.  It's likely there will be some informal swimming at Massey Park during the weekends the pool is closed.  Watch the club Facebook page for details.  As these sessions will not be club-endorsed, you'll need to pay your regular entry and jostle with the junior club and members of the public for lane space.

However, it does mean that we have training at Manurewa on this Saturday the 24th of July.  This has been confirmed.  See you there!

2.  Mid-Winter Madness.  Given the pool is closed for a few weeks, we did think we should have a mid-winter swim at Maraetai.  The tide is good on Saturday the 8th. (High-tide 10:55am).

Swim from Maraetai Beach, 9:00am Saturday 8th of July - weather permitting.  Wetsuits are recommended, but not compulsory.  Remember, the water's pretty chilly right now.  Swim within your capabilities.

Followed by Coffee (and snacks) at the cafe...

3.  Skins Skins Skins.  Our Annual Skins swimming meet is on Saturday 29th of July.  I've fielded a few questions from new members about the format.  Here are some details again:

  • We swim 5 events - Fly with Fins, Fly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle.
  • You only enter the events you want to swim in.  You do this by entering a time for you to do 50m of the stroke in the online entry form.  Worth checking yourself against a clock at the end of a training session.
  • You will be seeded with other swimmers of similar ability.
  • At the start up to 6 swimmers dive in and race 25m.  The last swimmer is eliminated.
  • After a break (about 30 seconds) the remaining swimmers start and race another 25m.  Again, the last swimmer is eliminated. This continues until a winner is found.
  • Points are awarded to all swimmers based on placings in their heat.
  • At the conclusion of the event, the Jane Logan Trophy is awarded to the club with the most points.  We are the reigning holders.

This is a great event to have a go at swim racing.  It's fun, and not too serious.  You should give it a go!  You can register by following the link on our website...

We request that all Club Members contribute something to put in our Spot Prize pool for afterwards, and bring a plate to share.  We have a reputation as great hosts!  You can bring any Spot Prizes to training and one of the committee will look after them.

4.  Our Constitution is changing.  Chris has learned that the legislation around clubs and charities has been changed and comes into force later this year.  This will mean your Committee will do some work to draft changes to our constitution in accordance with the new legislation.  It also means we'll be sending information out for your review and consideration. We'll also need to hold a Special General Meeting to ratify and adopt any required changes before the required date.  We'll be in touch over the coming few months with some more details.

Keep on swimming!

Olaf
